The iPhone and iOS development environment has come on strong indeed, however, it’s not only about Angry Birds, Social media clients, and mobile flatulants! There’s a number of powerful, enterprise-scale apps available as well as many apps that are developed specifically for the enterprise user and GIS/mapping professional. The following are a few apps that got our attention in 2010.
Avenza PDF Maps App for Apple iOS – Geospatial PDF reader for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. PDF Maps is the first application of its kind designed specifically for using geographically-aware PDF files on portable devices and opens the door to allowing any map to be GPS-aware. iPhone GIS from Integrity Logic – Integrity Logic has released a number of apps over the past several months, their business model being to release an app for each State (e.g. Geology TX, their Texas version of the GIS for the iPhone platform). Their apps are focused on Geological mapping and contain pre-defined data layers and functionality specific to each region’s geology. Some of the functionality that users get include:

Navman Wireless GPS Fleet Tracking on the Go – free iPhone app that makes real-time vehicle location maps and a variety of other fleet data available on the go from all iPhone models as well as the Apple iPad. CitySourced – I’m a huge fan of crowd-sourcing so this app is a huge hit. CitySourced enables the user to grab information and share a report with their local government agency. Snap a photo, geolocate it, add a description (like a pothole needing repair) and submit! This is an awesome service built using the ArcGIS API for iOS and a perfect complement to any local government looking to get up and running quickly with a useful mobile solution to connect with the local population. http://www.citysourced.com
TerraPad – This via Quebec-based Fasterre. Terrapad is a small-scale GIS product, available for free on the AppStore. Download it. Using Terrapad, you may browse the ‘extension store’ and download such customized extensions that are relevant to your field of work. Right now, we are selling some for fishermen, travelers, property buyers. They also have free extensions (metro maps of the world, geotags, Chicago transportation maps). The app is currently in Beta and can be found in the iTunes store by searching Terrapad

Nvision Solutions Oil Spill Response iPhone App – The free app allows users to report oil incidents found along the coastal regions including oiled shorelines and wildlife as well as generic reports on oil related damage and oil related incidents. GeoCritical – Real Time Mobile Tracking of Haiti workers
The company responded to demand and requests from Haiti for real-time tracking software for personnel entering Haiti. They responded by providing a 20 second over the air download to Blackberry and iPhones, Windows based Smartphones. Using the app, Organizations will have their own secured portal to monitor their responder’s activity. Users have been tracking in real-time with the application. A United Nations Security consultant stated the use of the software prior to the earthquake would have provide the last location of their missing personnel and aided in their recovery. Waze – free mobile navigation is a must and this free app not only provides you with free routing, turn by turn voice guided directions, but also puts you in touch with other road warriors who are sharing useful information (traffic delays, speed traps, hazards)
Pegshot – when simple checkin isn’t enough, use Pegshot to share photos and videos along the way.The best feature of Pegshot is the apps ability to quickly crunch data using a propritary algorith and quickly upload digital media (photos and video)
Pixelpipe – If you have a need to share media with multiple social streams and blogs then Pixelpipe enables you to upload your media to multiple services with one click.
Qik – video is all the rage and Qik is a fabulous app that enables you to share live video streams while on the road. the app even connects to other social services as well like Twitter and Youtube
