RICHMOND HILL, ONTARIO, CANADA – May 11, 2006 –The City of Kingston and the City of Kitchener were formally recognized for their exceptional accomplishments in GIS on May 3rd, 2006 at the 2006 URISA OC Be Spatial Expo and Project Showcase in Toronto, Ontario.
Held every year in May, the Awards recognize outstanding achievements in GIS in the areas of Best Web-GIS, Best Municipal GIS, Innovation in GIS and GIS Leadership.
The City of Kingston was awarded the gold medal in the Best Web-GIS category for their internet and intranet GIS implementations. The Best-Web GIS award is intended to increase awareness of Internet/Intranet mapping services that enable publishing and sharing of geographic information internally within an organization or externally with the public. Using Orion’s OnPoint™ Software, Kingston’s public web-GIS, Kmaps, provides a wealth of information for residents and tourists. Users can search for an address or intersection; find specific facilities or search for facilities near a particular address and can quickly and easily navigate to specific information using drop down tabs. The City has also implemented Orion’s OnSite™ Software, an Economic Development Tool that allows visitors to search available properties in the City and to obtain site reports detailing zoning, utilities and other information. Internally, the City is using OnPoint™ to access data stored in the centralized geodatabase and to export and print maps for reports and presentations, query attribute data, buffering and notification and to link to external databases such as the tax system, permit and licensing system and asset management system.
The City of Kitchener, one of Orion’s first clients, was awarded a Silver medal in the newly established Innovation in GIS category. This award recognizes organizations that demonstrate a new or refined innovation in the fields of GIS and geospatial technology. The City of Kitchener has developed and implemented a suite of innovative mobile GIS products to support operations staff as an extension to its robust enterprise web-GIS Intranet and web-portal built using Orion Technology’s OnPoint Software. Collectively known as “Going Mobile” these GPS enabled innovations include a tree inventory application, a trail capture application, a rare vegetation application and most recently a road patrol application. The mobile products have improved the City’s ability to maintain accurate asset inventories, such as public trails and tree inventories. The applications have also reduced risk to the municipality by enhancing their ability to meet legislative requirements in patrolling, recording, and ultimately repairing defects in their municipal road networks.
Orion clients have been among the award recipients at the URISA Be Spatial Conference for the past 5 years. “We are very proud of the accomplishments of our clients” stated Shafik Jiwani, Chief Operating Officer for Orion Technology “They represent the Best of the Best and their implementations are world-class. We always look forward to seeing how our clients will push the limits of technology.”
